Establishment of the prince’s power in the lands of the upper Oka (late 10th - first half of the 12th century)

The purpose of this scientific work is to examine the features of the incorporation of the Upper Oka region into the Old Russian state. The scientific problem lies in the lack of consensus among the scientific community regarding the duration of the integration of the Vyatichi lands into the system of feudal statehood. The contradictions in existing scientific views regarding the preservation of the autonomy of the Upper Oka lands within the Old Russian state and later under the suzerainty of the Chernigov and Novgorod-Seversk principalities require resolution. Comparative analysis and the comparative historical method were used as research methods, allowing for a comparison of the relationship between the princely authority and the tribal elite of the Vyatichi. Causal analysis of events in the area of the "Upper Lands" and the method of typologizing the stages of the history of the Vyatichi Land during the Middle Ages were used to solve the research tasks. The novelty of the research lies in the systematization of scientific The article presents scientific ideas about the struggle of the Grand Prince's authority for the territory of the Upper Oka region during the formation of feudal statehood, and the determination of the prerequisites for maintaining the special status of the Vyatichi tribal union in its relations with the supreme suzerains. The article also suggests and argues for the affiliation of the Upper Oka region to the domain of Prince Svyatoslav Olgovich of Novgorod-Seversk. Based on the conclusions drawn, it is possible to clarify the nature of the relationship between the supreme power and the proto-state communities ("chiefdoms", "Slavinias") of the East Slavic, Finnish and Baltic tribes in the era of Ancient Rus and feudal fragmentation. The content of the article may can be used for further research on the history of Chernigov and Novgorod development The principalities of Seversk in the XI – XIII centuries. The consideration of the transformation of the administrative territorial structure of the "Upper Lands" allows us to extrapolate the author's developments in further understanding the structure of power relations in the Old Russian statehood. As a result of the scientific work, a conclusion is formulated about the objective nature of the preservation of the special status of the Vyatichi tribal union in the system of feudal relations. The article argues for the increasing importance of the Upper Oka region as a resource base for princely-boyar colonization in the last quarter of the 11th century. This is associated with the transformation of the Upper Oka provinces into a subject of long-term rivalry between the princely families of the Olgovichi and the Davidovichs. It is substantiated that the transformation of the Vyatichi lands from a peripheral region into one of the epicenters of internecine conflict should be associated with the conditions of feudal fragmentation. In the situation of growing dynastic competition, the rival factions of the Chernigov and Novgorod-Seversk principalities constantly needed to ensure their political claims by using the economic, communication, and demographic potential of the Upper Oka territories.Downloads
