French president Nicolas Sarkozy on the pages of the british newspaper «The Guardian»: a man and a politician

The article is devoted to the issues of forming the image of the “other” by the media. The fo-cus is on the French president Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2012). The relevance of the topic under consideration is due to the importance of the problems of perception and image, on the one hand, and the need to study the process of forming the image of the “other” in the context of the changing domestic and international situation as a whole, on the other. The novelty of the study is determined by the absence of a comprehensive study on the stated problem in Russian historical science. The main sources are British newspapers. The methodology of the study of the topic includes several key aspects allowing to understand deeper of both Sarkozy’s personality and his political activities in the context of British media perception. The method of content analysis includes a systematic study of articles, publications and comments. The frequency of mentions, themes of articles, emotional coloring of texts (positive, neutral, negative) are analyzed, and special attention is paid to keywords and phrases that are used to describe Sarkozy. To understand the context of Sarkozy's political activity, it is necessary to study his work, as well as compare his actions and statements with the events in Europe and the world at that time. This may include an analysis of his economic, social and foreign policy decisions. An important aspect is the comparison of the perception of N. Sarkozy in the British and French media. This will allow to understand the differences and similarities in approaches to his personality, as well as analyze the influence of cultural and historical factors on this assessment. Comparison of not only textual materials, but also visual ones, such as cartoons, photographs, can also be useful for analyzing how The Guardian presented Sarkozy as a person and a politician. Based on the analysis of publication materials and cartoons of the left-liberal British daily newspaper The Guardian, an attempt was made to create an image of the French president, considering his characteristics as a politician and a person. The article touches upon only some aspects of his activities, primarily foreign policy-oriented, and presents assessments of N. Sarkozy's personal qualities, as well as the reasons for his defeat in the 2012 presidential elections. A conclusion is made about the importance of the media in forming the image of the "other" for the development of relations between different peoples.Downloads
