The purpose of the study is to examine the features of the promotion of command personnel of the Red Army in the period 1941-1943. The scientific problem is the lack of generally accepted positions of domestic historical science regarding the motivation and reasons for the rotation of commanders of rifle units in the first years of the war. The contradictions of existing scientific ideas regarding the change in the approaches of the highest military-political leadership to assessing the effectiveness of the combat work of the command staff of the Red Army during the first years of the Great Patriotic War require resolution. Comparative analysis and the comparative-historical method were used as research methods, allowing us to compare the content of the personnel policy of the Red Army in 1941-1943. To solve the research problems, a cause-and-effect analysis of the events of the Battle of Moscow, the Battle of the Oryol-Kursk Bulge, the liberation of Right-Bank Ukraine, as well as the method of typology of historical stages were used. The novelty of the study lies in the systematization of scientific ideas about the combat work of the commanders of the 6th Oryol Rifle Division in 1941-1943. The author puts forward and argues the assumption about the complex nature of the prerequisites and conditions for the appointment and removal of specific officers from command of the 6th Oryol Rifle Division. As a result of the scientific work, the objective nature of changes in the personnel of the 6th Oryol Rifle Division in 1941-1943 is proven. It is substantiated that the replacement of command personnel of the unit should be associated with strategic and operational conditions.
